경주 (Gyeongju), the old Silla capital, is close enough to Busan that you can see its greatest hits and still sleep in Busan: the intercity bus from Nopo costs ₩7,700 and takes about 50 minutes, and the KTX from Busan Station costs ₩10,100 (Korail fare from September 1, 2026) and takes about 30. The big sights on the day-trip loop are free, so a full day costs about ₩60,400 per person by bus and ₩91,200 by KTX. The catch is timing: the Seokguram shuttle stops in the late afternoon, and you need to know your last ride home before you leave.

Bus or KTX: which way to go

The decision is really about where you arrive. The intercity bus lands you downtown, close to the city-bus stops and about 15 minutes on foot from 황리단길 (Hwangnidan-gil). The KTX lands at 경주역 (Gyeongju-yeok), Gyeongju Station, formerly 신경주 (Singyeongju) and renamed on December 28, 2023 (Newsis). It is about 8 km from downtown, roughly 30 minutes by bus, and the old downtown station closed in 2021, so ignore any guide that sends you there.

Intercity bus, Busan Central Bus Terminal, 노포 (Nopo) ₩7,700 about 50 min, every 20–30 min Gyeongju Intercity Terminal, downtown
KTX, Busan Station ₩10,100 about 28–36 min Gyeongju Station
KTX-Eum, 신해운대 (Shin-Haeundae) ₩10,900 about 55–58 min Gyeongju Station
KTX-Eum, 부전 (Bujeon) ₩12,500 about 1h05–1h17 Gyeongju Station
Intercity bus, Haeundae ₩10,500 about 1h10–1h17, hourly Gyeongju Intercity Terminal

Rail fares are the standard-class fares in Korail's fare table effective September 1, 2026, after the KTX–SRT merger. Bus fares and all journey times are from booking sites as of September 25, 2026; bus fares can move, so check on the day.

Pick the bus if you are staying anywhere on Metro Line 1 in northern Busan: Nopo is the line's northern terminus, the bus is the cheapest option, and it leaves you next to buses 10 and 11 for 불국사 (Bulguksa). Pick the KTX if you are near Busan Station, or you want to save 20 minutes and do not mind the transfer. From Haeundae, the direct bus or the KTX-Eum from Shin-Haeundae are about equal; the bus drops you downtown, the train at the station. The full comparison, including Seoul and the airports, is in part 2: how to get to Gyeongju.

The timed itinerary: bus version

This plan assumes a weekday in autumn, when bus 12 runs only once an hour. At weekends it runs every 30 minutes, which makes the morning easier. City buses cost ₩1,450 by card or ₩1,500 in cash (since July 1, 2025); your T-money or WOWPASS works, with free transfers within 30 minutes (part 3: getting around).

Busan–Gyeongju day trip by bus (weekday, autumn)
  1. Intercity bus from Nopo (Busan Central Bus Terminal, Metro Line 1), about 50 min
  2. City bus 10 or 11 from the terminal area toward Bulguksa, typically 40–50 min; from Hwangnidan-gil, 11 is the quicker direction
  3. Bulguksa, free, open from 09:00; allow about 75 min
  4. Bus 12 up to Seokguram (hourly on weekdays), then a reported 20–30 min walk up from the car park
  5. Bus 12 back down, then bus 10 or 11 back to Hwangnidan-gil
  6. Lunch around Hwangnidan-gil
  7. Daereungwon tombs (free) and Cheonmachong, the one tomb you can enter (₩3,000)
  8. Cheomseongdae observatory, then walk south through the Gyerim woods to Gyochon and Woljeonggyo bridge (all free)
  9. Donggung and Wolji (₩3,000); stay until the lights come on at sunset
  10. Short taxi (base fare ₩4,500) or city bus back to the Intercity Terminal
  11. Intercity bus back to Nopo; check the last departure before you set out

The order matters. 석굴암 (Seokguram) closes at 17:30, and bus 12, the only public bus up the mountain, leaves Bulguksa for the last time at 17:20 until October 5, then about 16:40 for the rest of October and 16:20 from November to January, according to the reported timetable (first bus 08:40). Timetables change, so treat these as a guide and check the sign at the stop. Doing the temples in the morning leaves the downtown sights, which stay open late, for the afternoon and evening.

The timed itinerary: KTX version

The KTX is faster to Gyeongju, but the station end is the weak link. Only two buses go from Gyeongju Station straight to Bulguksa: 711 (about 10 runs a day, 07:07–20:23) and 700 (only 4 runs a day), each taking roughly 50–60 minutes, or longer at peak. On July 15, 2026 eight routes from the station, including these two, were moved off the expressway onto ordinary roads, so journey times may have grown.

Busan–Gyeongju day trip by KTX
  1. KTX from Busan Station, about 30 min
  2. At Gyeongju Station: take bus 711 or 700 if one is due soon; otherwise a taxi
  3. Bulguksa, then the same day as the bus version: Seokguram, lunch, Daereungwon, Cheomseongdae
  4. Donggung and Wolji at dusk
  5. City bus 50/51 or 70 from downtown to Gyeongju Station, about 30 min; or a taxi
  6. KTX back to Busan Station, about 30 min

We found no reliable taxi fare for the station to Bulguksa; one estimate puts it at ₩25,000 or more, so treat it as an estimate. The taxi from downtown back to the station was about ₩15,000–17,000 at 2024 meter rates. The base fare rose to ₩4,500 on February 1, 2026, so expect a bit more. Buses 60 and 61 pass Daereungwon and Cheomseongdae on the way to the station, but only every 70 minutes.

Lunch near Daereungwon

Lunch lands you on Hwangnidan-gil, the busiest street in town, so eat before 12:30 or after 14:00. These four are near the tombs and rate well on both Kakao Map and Google Maps (checked on September 25, 2026). The Combined column blends the two ratings and gives more weight to the platform with more reviews. It also pulls small samples toward 4.0, so a handful of five-star reviews cannot beat a large, solid average. Naver is not included, because it no longer shows star averages. Burdock gimbap is the budget pick; the Korean set meals are the sit-down option.

Last-train and last-bus checklist

  • Check your last ride home before you leave Busan. We could not confirm the last Gyeongju–Nopo bus or the last Gyeongju–Busan KTX from an official timetable. Look them up (Korail+ app for trains, the terminal or a bus-booking app for buses), and book the KTX return at the same time as the outbound trip. The Haeundae bus runs hourly, with the last departure from Gyeongju reported at 21:10.
  • Allow 30 minutes to reach Gyeongju Station from downtown if you came by KTX. Leave Donggung and Wolji at least an hour before your train.
  • Do Seokguram before lunch. After the last bus 12 has gone, the only way up is by taxi.
  • Pay by card. City buses are ₩50 cheaper with T-money or WOWPASS than with cash, and transfers are free. Seoul's Climate Card does not work here (transit cards compared).
  • Travel light. Leave big bags in a locker at Busan Station or Nopo (luggage storage).
  • Avoid festival weekends if you want quiet. The Silla Culture Festival runs October 9–11, 2026, and the Gyeongju Marathon on October 17 (reported) will close roads downtown and around Bomun.

If one day feels too rushed, the next part turns this into a two-day Seoul–Gyeongju–Busan loop. If Busan is your base, the Busan 2–3 day itinerary covers the rest of your stay.

Frequently asked questions

Is a day trip from Busan to Gyeongju worth it?

Yes, if you start early. The KTX takes about 30 minutes and the Nopo intercity bus about 50, so you can see Bulguksa, Seokguram, Daereungwon, Cheomseongdae and the Donggung and Wolji night view in one long day. What you give up is a relaxed evening and the National Museum; for those, stay a night (part 5 of this series).

Bus or KTX from Busan to Gyeongju?

The bus from Busan Central Bus Terminal (Nopo) costs ₩7,700 and drops you downtown, next to the city buses for Bulguksa. The KTX from Busan Station costs ₩10,100 (Korail fare from Sept 1, 2026) and is faster, but it arrives at Gyeongju Station, about 8 km outside the center, where buses to Bulguksa are infrequent. From Haeundae, the direct bus (₩10,500) or the KTX-Eum from Shin-Haeundae (₩10,900) are the easy choices.

What time is the last bus from Bulguksa to Seokguram?

Bus 12 leaves Bulguksa for Seokguram for the last time at 17:20 until October 5, then about 16:40 for the rest of October and 16:20 from November to January (reported timetable). It runs hourly on weekdays and every 30 minutes at weekends, first departure 08:40. Timetables change, so check the sign at the stop, and do Seokguram in the morning.

How much does a Gyeongju day trip from Busan cost?

About ₩60,400 per person by bus with a cheap lunch, or about ₩91,200 by KTX with a sit-down lunch and a café stop. Bulguksa, Seokguram, Daereungwon and Cheomseongdae are free; the only tickets on this route are Cheonmachong (₩3,000) and Donggung and Wolji (₩3,000).
