Contents
The most useful way to see 경주 (Gyeongju) is as the middle stop between Seoul and Busan: take the KTX down from Seoul (₩44,500, about two hours), sleep one night near the tombs, and carry on to Busan the next afternoon (₩10,100 by KTX or ₩7,700 by bus). One night costs about ₩150,900 per person on a budget and ₩243,600 in comfort. The city says visitors stay about 1.8 days on average; this plan fits that, and it puts the night views on the evening you are actually there.
The loop: Seoul in, Busan out
| Leg | Option | Fare (one way) | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seoul → Gyeongju | KTX from Seoul Station | ₩44,500 | about 2h–2h20 |
| KTX from Suseo | ₩42,900 | few trains; check Korail+ | |
| KTX-Eum from Cheongnyangni | ₩42,900 | about 2h35–2h55 | |
| Express bus, 우등 (udeung, wide seats) | ₩30,500 | about 3h30 | |

| KTX-Eum to Shin-Haeundae | ₩10,900 | about 55 min | |
| Intercity bus to Nopo | ₩7,700 | about 50 min |
Rail fares are from Korail's fare table effective September 1, 2026, after the KTX–SRT merger; before it, Seoul–Gyeongju cost ₩49,300. Express-bus fares are as of September 25, 2026 (premium ₩35,600, standard ₩20,600); a rise of about 9% from October 1 has been reported, so check the price on the day. The KTX stops at 경주역 (Gyeongju-yeok), Gyeongju Station, formerly 신경주 (Singyeongju), about 8 km and 30 minutes by bus from downtown. The express bus drops you downtown. More detail is in part 2: getting there.
Bags. Zimcarry at Gyeongju Station (1F, by Exit 1, 09:00–23:00) stores a suitcase for ₩5,000–10,000 and delivers it to your hotel the same day from ₩12,000 (drop off by 14:50, delivery from 16:00). Other options are in luggage storage in Korea.
Day 1: tombs, hanbok and the night views
- KTX from Seoul Station, about 2 hours
- Send your bag to the hotel; bus 50/51 or 70 downtown, about 30 min
- Hwangnidan-gil before the crowds; Hwangnam bread for breakfast

Everything on day 1 is within walking distance of 황리단길 (Hwangnidan-gil) and 대릉원 (Daereungwon). Hwangnidan-gil is busiest in the afternoon, so go before 10:00 or around sunset. Donggung and Wolji is open until 22:00 (last entry 21:30), so if the queue is long at dusk, come back after dinner.

The museum is open 10:00–18:00 on weekdays and to 21:00 on Saturdays from March to December. It is closed on January 1, on Seollal and Chuseok days, and on the first Monday of March and November. The 2025–26 gold-crowns exhibition ended on February 22, 2026. Bus details are in part 3: getting around, fees in part 6: free vs paid, and the next stop in the Busan 2–3 day itinerary.

Book early for the Silla Culture Festival (October 9–11), the Gyeongju Marathon on October 17 (reported) and the first anniversary of APEC on October 31.
How we picked these: we pulled rated places in each area from 카카오맵 (Kakao Map), the map most Koreans use for reviews, and checked each one on Google Maps on September 25, 2026. The Combined score weights each platform by how many ratings it has and pulls small samples toward 4.0, so a 5.0 from five people cannot beat a 4.4 from a thousand. Places rated well on only one platform were left out. Naver Map no longer shows star averages, so it is not in the score, but the Naver link opens each place there. Ratings move and places close, so check before you go.

Where to eat, and what Gyeongju food costs
| Item | 2026 price | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 쌈밥 (ssambap), per person | about ₩18,000–24,000 | pork to Jeju galbi; 30+ side dishes; usually two-person minimum |

| Americano | about ₩3,500–4,500 | hanok "view" cafés about ₩6,000–9,000 (estimate) |
Hwangnam-ppang is one bakery's red-bean bun, sold at its own stores; 경주빵 (Gyeongju-ppang) is the name for similar buns from other brands, and we found no current price for it. Ssambap prices have risen: an older TV listing showed the pork set at ₩15,000. The best-known ssambap house on the alley, 정록쌈밥 (Jeongrok Ssambap), is not in the table below because its ratings split (4.7 on Kakao, 3.7 on Google).

Hanbok rental
A 한복 (hanbok) rental makes the most sense on day 1, between lunch and the tombs. Gyeongju Hanbokpan on Poseok-ro charges ₩10,000 for one hour, ₩16,000 for two, ₩20,000 for three and ₩30,000 for the day, with photos included. It is closed on Thursdays (VisitKorea). Kkotgil Hanbok, three minutes from Daereungwon, sold a full day with hairstyling for about US$17 on Klook in September 2026.

Before you book
- Book the Seoul KTX early for weekends; trains to Gyeongju have sold out on busy days.
- Pick your base by your evenings: walkable night views mean Hwangnidan-gil; a pool and a lake walk mean Bomun.
- Do Seokguram in the morning, before the last bus 12.
- Use T-money or WOWPASS on city buses (₩1,450 by card vs ₩1,500 cash).
- Avoid Thursdays if you want Hanbokpan's rates.
Frequently asked questions
Is two days enough for Gyeongju?
Two days covers the essentials without rushing: the downtown tombs, Cheomseongdae and the Donggung and Wolji night view on day 1, and Bulguksa, Seokguram and the National Museum on day 2. The city says the average visitor stays about 1.8 days. Add a third day for Yangdong Village, Namsan or a slow afternoon at Bomun Lake.
Should I stay at Hwangnidan-gil or Bomun Lake?
Stay near Hwangnidan-gil if you want to walk to the tombs, the cafés and the night views; guesthouse rooms start around ₩33,000 and hanok rooms run about ₩90,000–205,000 (booking-site snapshots). Stay at Bomun for a resort hotel, a lake walk and bigger rooms; Expedia snapshots for late September–early October started around US$70–176 a night, but Saturdays and October cost much more.
How much is ssambap and Hwangnam bread in Gyeongju?
Ssambap, the rice-and-wraps meal with 30-odd side dishes, costs about ₩18,000–24,000 per person on the alley by Daereungwon, usually with a two-person minimum. Hwangnam-ppang costs ₩1,400 a piece or ₩28,000 for a box of 20 at the main store. The 10-won bread sold on Hwangnidan-gil is about ₩3,500 each.
How do I get from Gyeongju to Busan?
By KTX from Gyeongju Station to Busan Station for ₩10,100 (about 30 minutes), by KTX-Eum to Shin-Haeundae for ₩10,900, or by intercity bus from downtown to Busan Central Bus Terminal (Nopo) for ₩7,700 (about 50 minutes). The bus is simplest if you are staying downtown, because Gyeongju Station is about 8 km out of town.
