경주 (Gyeongju), the capital of the Silla kingdom for close to a thousand years, is the easiest big-history trip in Korea: most of its famous sights have been free since May 2023, the KTX from Seoul costs ₩44,500 in standard class, and Busan is half an hour away by train. A day trip from Busan costs about ₩60,400–₩91,200 per person; one night from Seoul about ₩173,700–₩278,000. This guide covers why the city is suddenly on foreign itineraries, how many days to give it, when to go in 2026–2027, and which of the six parts of this series to read next.
Why Gyeongju now: APEC and the numbers behind the buzz
Gyeongju hosted the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting on October 31–November 1, 2025, at the Hwabaek International Convention Center (HICO) in the 보문관광단지 (Bomun Gwangwang Danji), the Bomun lake resort. The Korea–US summit (October 29) and the Korea–China summit (November 1) were both held at the National Gyeongju Museum, where President Lee gave Donald Trump a replica of the Cheonmachong gold crown. Right after the summit the museum put all six Silla gold crowns on show together for the first time; the exhibition drew 285,401 people and closed on February 22, 2026, so do not plan a trip around it.
The attention shows in the data. The Korea Tourism Data Lab counts 1,385,284 foreign visitors in 2025, up about 17%, and 707,197 in January–June 2026, up 19%. Read those numbers carefully: they are foreign SIM cards seen in the city per day, so one person who stays three days counts three times. They measure visitor-days, not people. Two more figures keep the hype in proportion:
| Measure (source) | Figure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign visitor-days, 2025 (Data Lab) | 1,385,284 (+~17%) | Person-days, not unique visitors |
| Foreign visitor-days, H1 2026 (Data Lab) | 707,197 (+19%) | April, cherry-blossom month, was the peak |
| All non-resident visitor-days, 2025 | about 50.2 million | Foreigners are under 3% of the crowd |
| Foreign spending, 2025 | ₩24.5 billion | Highest of any city in North Gyeongsang |
| Share of foreign visitors to Korea who went to North Gyeongsang, 2025 | 2.3% (KTO survey, as cited by a lawmaker) | Still far off the Seoul–Busan track |
In short, Gyeongju is busy but mostly with Korean weekend visitors, and foreigners are a small, fast-growing share. In the first half of 2026 the largest groups were visitors from China (16.5%), Taiwan (9.3%), Japan (6.4%) and the US (6.1%, about double its share two years earlier). The city's own target is 2 million foreign visitors a year and a longer average stay than today's 1.8 days.
Where do they go? The Data Lab splits 2025 foreign visitor-days by neighborhood:

The old-town streets around 황리단길 (Hwangnidan-gil), a lane of 한옥 (hanok) cafés and shops next to the tombs, now pull more foreign visits than the temples. Hwangnidan-gil was named a 2025 "Korea Tourism Star" destination by the culture ministry and KTO.
How many days you need
| Trip | What fits | Best for | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day trip from Busan | Downtown tombs and Cheomseongdae, Donggung and Wolji at dusk; Bulguksa only with an early start | Busan-based travelers, cruise days | Part 4 |
| 1 night (2 days) | Everything above plus Bulguksa and Seokguram, the museum, a slow evening | Most first visits; the Seoul → Gyeongju → Busan loop | Part 5 |
| 2 nights (3 days) | Add Yangdong Village, Namsan trails or the east coast | History fans, slow travelers | Part 6 |
A day trip works because the downtown sights sit within walking distance of each other. What breaks it is the distance to 불국사 (Bulguksa) and 석굴암 (Seokguram), about 40–50 minutes by city bus from downtown, plus the train station being far out of town. If you come from Seoul, one night is the minimum that does not feel rushed; the KTX alone takes about two hours each way.

The bus day trip is the intercity bus from 노포 (Nopo) terminal in Busan (₩7,700 each way) plus Gyeongju city buses (₩1,450 a ride by card). The KTX day trip swaps that for KTX from Busan Station (₩10,100 each way) and one taxi. Both include tickets for Donggung and Wolji and Cheonmachong (₩3,000 each), the two paid stops on the classic downtown route. The Seoul budget night is the 우등 (udeung) express bus both ways (₩30,500 each way as of September 25) and a guesthouse room; the comfort night is KTX both ways (₩44,500 each way), a few taxis, and half of a hanok or Bomun hotel room at about ₩150,000. Rooms and meals are estimates from booking-site and menu snapshots, not quotes.
Two things move these totals. Express-bus fares are reported to rise about 9% from October 1, 2026, which would add roughly ₩5,500 to the Seoul budget column, so check the price on the day. And rooms get much dearer on October and April Saturdays: one lakeside hotel's October average on a price tracker was about twice its January rate.
When to go: seasons and 2026–2027 events
| When | What happens | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Late Mar – early Apr | Cherry blossoms at Bomun Lake, Daereungwon's stone-wall road and Woljeonggyo | The busiest month for foreign visits; the 2026 stone-wall road festival ran Apr 3–5 |
| Early Apr | Gyeongju Cherry Blossom Marathon | 2026 was Apr 4; roads around Bomun close on race morning |
| May – Aug | Long light evenings for the night views | Hot and humid; start early, rest in the museum at midday |
| September | National Heritage Night (2026 edition was Sep 18–20) | Usually returns in September |
| Oct 9–11, 2026 | 53rd Silla Culture Festival at Bonghwangdae and Woljeonggyo | Water, drone and fireworks show at about 19:00 on Oct 9–10 |
| Oct 17, 2026 | Gyeongju Marathon (reported; from the Civic Stadium at 08:00) | Road closures downtown and around Bomun |
| Oct 31, 2026 | APEC first anniversary: ceremony, photo exhibition, drone show (planned) | A memorial hall is due around then; its opening date has slipped before |
| Late Oct – early Nov | Tongiljeon ginkgo road and autumn leaves at Bulguksa | See the autumn foliage guide |
| Dec – Feb | Quietest, cheapest rooms | Seokguram's last bus runs earlier in winter |
If you can choose, a weekday in mid-October or the first week of November gives you autumn color without festival crowds. Korean holidays are the worst days to arrive — on Chuseok day (September 25 in 2026) even the National Gyeongju Museum is closed. Weekend and holiday KTX seats from Seoul can sell out, so book as soon as your dates are fixed. For other dates across the country, see the Korea festival calendar 2026–2027.
Getting there in one table
The KTX stops at Gyeongju Station, 경주역 (Gyeongju-yeok), formerly 신경주 (Singyeongju); it was renamed on December 28, 2023, according to Newsis, and sits about 8 km from downtown. Intercity and express buses stop downtown, close to the tombs.
| From | Fastest | Cheapest |
|---|---|---|
| Seoul Station | KTX, ₩44,500, about 2 h | Express bus from the Seoul Express Bus Terminal, ₩20,600 standard / ₩30,500 우등 (udeung), about 3 h 30 |
| Suseo / Cheongnyangni (Seoul) | KTX ₩42,900 / KTX-Eum ₩42,900 | — |
| Busan Station | KTX, ₩10,100, about 30 min | — |
| Nopo, northern Busan | — | Intercity bus, ₩7,700, about 50 min |
| Haeundae | KTX-Eum from Shin-Haeundae, ₩10,900 | Intercity bus, ₩10,500 |
KTX fares are Korail standard-class fares from September 1, 2026, after the KTX–SRT merger (Seoul was ₩49,300 before); check them in Korail's fare search. Part 2 compares every route door to door, including Incheon and Gimhae airports.

Five things people get wrong
- "Singyeongju Station." The name is now Gyeongju Station; book to 경주 (Gyeongju) in the Korail app. The old downtown station closed in 2021.
- Paying old entry fees. Bulguksa, Seokguram and the Daereungwon grounds are free; many blogs still list 2022 prices. Donggung and Wolji (₩3,000) and Cheonmachong (₩3,000) still charge.
- Planning around things that are gone. Silla Millennium Park has been closed since 2017, and the six-crown exhibition ended on February 22, 2026.
- Bringing the wrong card. T-money and WOWPASS work on Gyeongju buses; Seoul's Climate Card does not.
- Leaving the return trip open. The last trains and buses back to Busan and Seoul fill up on weekends; book them when you book the outbound leg.
Frequently asked questions
Is Gyeongju worth visiting in 2026?
Yes, if you like history you can walk through. The former Silla capital hosted the APEC leaders' meeting on October 31–November 1, 2025, and foreign visits have kept rising since: 1,385,284 foreign visitor-days in 2025 (about +17%) and 707,197 in the first half of 2026 (+19%). Most headline sights, including Bulguksa, Seokguram and the Daereungwon tomb park, have been free since May 2023.
How many days do you need in Gyeongju?
One full day covers the downtown tombs, Cheomseongdae and the Donggung and Wolji night view, plus Bulguksa if you start early; that is the classic day trip from Busan. Two days (one night) is better and lets you add Seokguram, the National Gyeongju Museum and a slower evening. The city itself says the average stay is 1.8 days and wants visitors to stay three.
How much does a trip to Gyeongju cost?
Per person, about ₩60,400 for a Busan day trip by intercity bus and ₩91,200 by KTX, including two paid sights and food. One night from Seoul costs about ₩173,700 by express bus with a guesthouse, or ₩278,000 by KTX with half of a hanok or Bomun hotel room. Room and meal figures are estimates.
What is Gyeongju's train station called?
Gyeongju Station, 경주역 (Gyeongju-yeok). It was called Singyeongju until it was renamed on December 28, 2023, and the old downtown station closed in December 2021. It is about 8 km from downtown, so plan on a city bus or taxi. The KTX standard fare from Seoul is ₩44,500 and from Busan ₩10,100 (Korail, from September 1, 2026).
When is the best time to visit Gyeongju?
Late March to the first week of April for cherry blossoms, and October to early November for the autumn season. In 2026 the Silla Culture Festival runs October 9–11, the Gyeongju Marathon is reported for October 17, the APEC first-anniversary events are planned for October 31, and the Tongiljeon ginkgo road usually peaks from late October to early November.
