From Seoul, the fastest way to 경주 (Gyeongju) is the KTX from Seoul Station: ₩44,500 in standard class and about two hours, on the Korail fare table in force since the KTX–SRT merger on September 1, 2026. The express bus costs ₩20,600–₩35,600 and takes about three and a half hours, but it drops you downtown, while every train stops at Gyeongju Station, about 8 km out. From Busan it is a half-hour, ₩10,100 KTX ride or a ₩7,700 bus from Nopo. Below: every route, the airports, and a door-to-door comparison.

Seoul → Gyeongju, KTX₩44,500about 2h, standard class
Seoul → Gyeongju, express bus₩20,600–35,600about 3h30, as of Sept 25
Busan → Gyeongju, KTX₩10,100about 30 min
Nopo → Gyeongju, bus₩7,700about 50 min, downtown

Where you arrive: Gyeongju Station or the downtown terminals

Every train now stops at 경주역 (Gyeongju-yeok), Gyeongju Station — the KTX station formerly called 신경주 (Singyeongju), renamed on December 28, 2023 (Newsis). The old downtown station closed in December 2021, and so did the small station near 불국사 (Bulguksa), so no train stops in the historic center any more. Book to "Gyeongju"; guides that tell you to look for a separate KTX station are out of date.

Buses are the opposite: express and intercity buses end at the two terminals that sit side by side at the edge of downtown, about a 15-minute walk from 황리단길 (Hwangnidan-gil) and the tombs of 대릉원 (Daereungwon). That single difference decides most trips.

Arrival point Who arrives there Onward to Hwangnidan-gil
Gyeongju Station KTX, KTX-Eum, ITX-Maum, Mugunghwa City bus about 30 min (₩1,450 by card) or taxi (about ₩17,000–20,000, our estimate)
Gyeongju Express Bus Terminal Express buses from Seoul About 15 min on foot
Gyeongju Intercity Bus Terminal Buses from Nopo, Haeundae, Incheon and Gimhae airports About 15 min on foot

From Seoul: KTX, KTX-Eum or express bus

Seoul → Gyeongju, one way Standard fare Time Notes
KTX from Seoul Station ₩44,500 about 2h01–2h21 About 29 trains a day, 05:13–21:33

KTX-Eum from Cheongnyangni (east Seoul) ₩42,900 about 2h34–2h56 Jungang Line, continues to Busan
Express bus, premium ₩35,600 about 3h30 Seoul Express Bus Terminal
Express bus, 우등 (udeung) ₩30,500 about 3h30 Wider seats
Express bus, standard ₩20,600 about 3h30 About 10 departures a day

Train fares are Korail's official figures (fare table, effective September 1, 2026). The merger cut KTX fares by about 10% on average: Seoul–Gyeongju was ₩49,300 until August 31, and many blogs still quote that price. Book in the Korail+ app (KorailTalk until August 3, 2026), on korail.com or at a station counter; the booking window is now two months. Weekend and holiday trains can sell out, so buy once your date is fixed. If a foreign card fails in the app (3D Secure problems are still reported), try the website or a counter.

The KTX-Eum from 청량리 (Cheongnyangni) runs down the Jungang Line via Andong, stops at Gyeongju and continues to Busan's 부전 (Bujeon). It is 30–40 minutes slower than the KTX but starts on the east side of Seoul. A few ITX-Maum trains use the same line and take four hours or more.

The express bus leaves from Seoul Express Bus Terminal (the 경부 (Gyeongbu) side) about ten times a day and takes about 3h30 without traffic — longer on weekends and holidays. Fares above are as of September 25, 2026. Express-bus fares are scheduled to rise about 9% from October 1, 2026 (reported), which would put them around ₩22,500 / ₩33,200 / ₩38,800 — check the price on the day. Premium is only ₩8,900 cheaper than the KTX today; standard is less than half.

Korail and bus operator timetables, Sept 25, 2026. Trains arrive at Gyeongju Station, 8 km from downtown; buses arrive downtown.

Is a KORAIL Pass worth it? The 2-day pass for foreigners costs ₩131,000. A Seoul → Gyeongju → Busan → Seoul loop at standard fares (₩44,500 + ₩10,100 + ₩54,400 Busan–Seoul) is ₩109,000, so the pass only pays off if you add more trains. Whether it covers Suseo departures after the merger has not been confirmed.

From Busan: KTX from Busan Station, KTX-Eum from Haeundae, or the bus

Busan → Gyeongju, one way Mode Fare Time You arrive at
Busan Station KTX ₩10,100 about 28–36 min Gyeongju Station
신해운대 (Shin-Haeundae) KTX-Eum ₩10,900 about 55 min Gyeongju Station
Bujeon KTX-Eum ₩12,500 about 1h05–1h17 Gyeongju Station
Busan Central Bus Terminal (Nopo) Intercity bus ₩7,700 about 50 min, every 20–30 min Intercity terminal, downtown
Haeundae intercity bus stop Intercity bus ₩10,500 about 1h10, hourly Intercity terminal, downtown

Rail looks fastest, but add roughly 30 minutes on a city bus from Gyeongju Station. The Nopo bus is the budget pick: Nopo is the northern end of Busan Metro Line 1, the bus runs all day from 06:20, and it drops you a short walk from Hwangnidan-gil. From Haeundae, the direct bus (no stops at Bulguksa or 보문 (Bomun)) and the KTX-Eum from Shin-Haeundae come out close in total time; the train depends on how well the connecting city bus lines up. Slower ITX-Maum and Mugunghwa trains are cheaper still — check Korail+.

For a timed plan, read the Gyeongju day trip from Busan; for the Busan side, the Busan 2–3 day itinerary.

From the airports

  • Incheon. The Incheon Airport–Pohang intercity bus stops at the Gyeongju Intercity Bus Terminal: about ₩43,900 (late night ₩52,700; 2025 fares), about 10 departures a day. Estimates of the ride run from about 5 hours to 6.5–7 hours from Terminal 2, so treat it as the no-transfer option, not the fast one. The quicker route is AREX to Seoul Station, then the KTX (about 2 hours).
  • Gimpo. Take AREX or the subway to Seoul Station and pick up the KTX there.
  • Gimhae (Busan). The Pohang-bound intercity bus from Gimhae Airport stops at the Gyeongju Intercity Bus Terminal: about 1 hour, 15 departures a day (07:20–22:00 in the last published timetable). It was listed at ₩9,500 in 2024-era data and may have gone up — check on Bustago or at the counter. It does not stop at Bomun.
  • Daegu. From Dongdaegu Station, the KTX to Gyeongju is ₩7,500 and about 18–19 minutes, with about 24 trains a day.
  • Pohang Gyeongju Airport. Despite the name, its winter 2026 schedule is Jeju only, two round trips a day, and we found no dedicated bus to Gyeongju. Check before you book a flight into it.

Door to door: which is really faster?

To Hwangnidan-gil, per person Total time (about) Cost
Seoul Station: KTX + city bus 3h–3h30 ₩45,950
Seoul Station: KTX + taxi 2h45 about ₩61,500–64,500
Seoul Express Bus Terminal: udeung bus + walk 3h45–4h+ ₩30,500
Busan Station: KTX + city bus 1h15–1h30 ₩11,550
Nopo: intercity bus + walk 1h05 ₩7,700
Haeundae: intercity bus + walk 1h30 ₩10,500
Shin-Haeundae: KTX-Eum + city bus 1h45 ₩12,350

These are our estimates from timetables, including a typical wait for the connecting bus; taxi fares are estimates at the February 2026 meter rate. Since July 15, 2026 the buses from the station use ordinary roads instead of the expressway, so the bus leg may run longer than older guides say.

From Seoul, the KTX saves 45–60 minutes and costs about ₩15,000–25,000 more than the bus. From Busan, the Nopo bus is the cheapest and, to downtown, about as quick as the train. If you are heading straight to Bulguksa from the station, the direct buses are few — see getting around Gyeongju for the 700 and 711 routes. Bags can be left at a counter in Gyeongju Station (luggage storage in Korea).

Before you book: common mistakes

  • Searching for "Singyeongju". There is one Gyeongju Station now, and no train into the old downtown.
  • Quoting old fares. ₩49,300 was the pre-September 2026 KTX fare; the current one is ₩44,500.
  • Leaving weekend trains too late. Book as soon as your dates are fixed; the window is two months.
  • Assuming bus fares stay put. The October 1 increase was reported but check the fare on the day.
  • Forgetting the station hop. Budget 30 minutes and ₩1,450 each way between Gyeongju Station and downtown.
  • Bringing only a Climate Card. It is Seoul-only; a T-money or WOWPASS card works on Gyeongju buses (transit cards compared).

This is part 2 of 6. Start with why Gyeongju, and how many days, then plan nights with the 2-day itinerary and where to stay and fees with free vs paid sights. For other cities off the Seoul–Busan line, see Korea beyond Seoul.
