Korean phones are not cheaper in Korea — Koreanomics
Contents

Korea makes the phones, the screens and the memory, and visitors assume that makes them cheap here. It does not: Samsung prices Korea like the US, and the money in a Korean phone purchase is in the plan, not the handset. This part gives the 2026 prices, the unlocked-versus-contract maths over two years, where to buy (and what happened to Yongsan), the tax refund, plugs and warranties.

Phone cost over 24 months: unlocked + MVNO vs carrier contract

Defaults: Galaxy S26 256 GB at ₩1,254,000 (Korean launch price, Feb 2026); MVNO 10 GB+ plans ₩11,000–33,000; carrier 5G plans from ₩50,000 (KT 5G Slim, 10 GB) to ₩55,000 (SKT Direct 5G, 250 GB) and ₩76,000+ unlimited; S26 subsidies of ₩264,500–287,500 applied to the top plans in March 2026. Alternatively carriers offer a 25% plan discount instead of a subsidy (선택약정) — enter it as a lower plan price with subsidy 0. US comparison uses ₩1,380/US$.

What it costs

The Galaxy S26 launched in Korea in February 2026 at ₩1,254,000 (256 GB; S26+ about ₩1,452,000, Ultra about ₩1,797,000), up about ₩99,000 on the S25 tier for tier; in the US the same phone is US$899.99 before sales tax — about ₩1,241,986 at ₩1,380 to the dollar. Korea's price includes 10% VAT, so the two are within a few percent; the tourist tax refund is what makes Korea marginally cheaper. iPhones cost 5–10% more in Korea than in the US; Apple has at least four stores (Garosugil, Myeongdong, Yeouido, Jamsil) and authorised resellers everywhere. Laptops, tablets and TVs follow the same pattern: Korean brands at world prices, foreign brands slightly above. Where Korea is cheap: accessories, cases, cables and chargers (Daiso and the online malls), Korean-brand earphones and small appliances, and Samsung and LG models sold only here.

Where to buy

Samsung Store (삼성스토어, the former Digital Plaza, in every district) and LG Best Shop — official, full range, tax-free desks, English at the flagship stores (Samsung Gangnam, Hongdae). Hi-Mart (하이마트) and Electro Mart (일렉트로마트, inside E-mart) — multi-brand chains with frequent card-installment promotions; Coupang and the online malls — usually the lowest price for a boxed product, delivered tomorrow (the Coupang guide); Apple Store and Frisbee/Willys for Apple; Yongsan Electronics Market (용산전자상가), the old bazaar of PC parts and cameras, now much reduced and awaiting redevelopment — still worth a visit for PC components and camera gear at negotiable prices, with the usual warnings about receipts and grey imports; and Danawa (다나와), the price-comparison site every Korean checks first. Carrier shops (SKT, KT, LG U+ storefronts on every street) sell phones with plans and are where the subsidy trap lives.

Unlocked, and the plan

All phones sold in Korea are unlocked — carrier-independent sales (자급제) have been law since 2012 — so a phone from a Samsung store or Coupang takes any SIM. The decision is the plan. The big three carriers' 5G plans start around ₩50,000 for 10 GB and run to ₩76,000–130,000 for unlimited with perks; their online-only "direct" plans are cheaper (SKT Direct 5G: ₩55,000 for 250 GB). MVNOs (알뜰폰 — dozens of brands on the same three networks) sell 10–100 GB plans for ₩11,000–33,000 a month, no contract, signed up online with a residence card (the phone guide covers the face-verification rule from July 2026). The carriers' subsidies — ₩264,500–287,500 on the S26 in March 2026 — require their most expensive plans for 24 months; since the 2025 repeal of the subsidy-cap law (단통법) the headline numbers have grown and so have the plan conditions. The calculator's default case: unlocked plus a ₩20,000 MVNO plan beats the contract by about ₩900,000 over two years.

Tax refund, plugs, warranties

Electronics qualify for the tourist tax refund at registered tax-free shops — Samsung and LG official stores, Hi-Mart, Electro Mart, Apple Store and the department-store electronics floors — under the standard rules (₩15,000 minimum, instant refund up to ₩1,000,000 per purchase, otherwise the airport kiosk with the goods sealed; the guide). A phone over ₩1,000,000 means the airport route and a sealed box, so plan the purchase for the last days. Power: 220 V / 60 Hz, Type C and F sockets — European plugs fit, US and UK ones need an adapter; dual-voltage chargers are fine. Warranties: Samsung and LG honour a limited international warranty on phones in most countries through their service centres, less reliably on other products; Apple's is worldwide for the same model. Korean-market phones may carry region features — Samsung Pay with T-money, the camera shutter sound on older models, Korean-only emergency alerts — and the Korean keyboard is a settings change. Keep the receipt: Korean returns are the subject of the last part.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Samsung phone cheaper in Korea?

No. The Galaxy S26 (256 GB) launched at ₩1,254,000 in Korea in February 2026 against US$899.99 in the US — about US$910 at ₩1,380 to the dollar, so roughly the same before tax, and the US price excludes sales tax while Korea's includes 10% VAT. A tourist's tax refund at an official Samsung store brings it 5–8% below the Korean sticker; the real Korean advantage is the local-only colours and models, and the accessories. iPhones are priced 5–10% above the US in won.

Are Korean phones locked to a carrier?

No — Korea has required carrier-independent (자급제) sales since 2012, and even carrier-sold phones are unlocked. A phone bought at a Samsung store or Coupang works on any Korean carrier and abroad; check the bands for your home network (Korean models cover the global LTE/5G bands, but a few US carrier bands differ). Korean-market Galaxies have Samsung Pay with Korean transit-card support and, on older models, a shutter sound that cannot be turned off.

Contract or unlocked plus a cheap plan?

For almost everyone, unlocked plus an MVNO (알뜰폰) plan: a 10 GB-plus LTE or 5G plan from an MVNO costs ₩11,000–33,000 a month with no contract, against ₩50,000–76,000 for a big-carrier 5G plan. Carrier subsidies on the S26 were ₩265,000–288,000 in March 2026 but only on ₩90,000-plus plans for 24 months — the subsidy is repaid many times over. The calculator shows the two totals side by side.

Will my foreign appliances work?

Korea is 220 V, 60 Hz with the round two-pin Type C and F plugs used in continental Europe. Phone and laptop chargers are dual-voltage and need only an adapter; US hair dryers and kitchen appliances need a transformer or replacement. Korean-bought appliances are 220 V only — fine for Europe, Australia and most of Asia, useless in the US and Japan without a converter.
