34 million users, one membership question — Koreanomics
Contents

Coupang is Korea's Amazon and more so: 34.4 million monthly users in a country of 51 million, next-morning "Rocket" delivery of almost anything, groceries by dawn, food delivery, streaming, and overseas purchases, all in one app. For a foreigner it is the fastest way to furnish an apartment and the hardest app to get a card into. This part covers the sign-up, the card problem and its 2026 solution, the membership maths, the delivery rules that changed in April 2026, customs on overseas orders, returns, and what the 2025 data breach means for you.

Is WOW worth it? (2026)

Assumptions: non-member delivery fee ₩3,000 on orders under ₩19,800 (net of coupons, since April 2026); Rocket Fresh requires WOW (non-members: a mart app with a ₩3,000 fee or a ₩40,000 minimum); Coupang Eats delivery fee ≈ ₩3,000 for non-members outside promotions (₩0 for WOW); returns ₩5,000 for non-members on non-defective items. WOW ₩7,890/month.

Signing up

The app (쿠팡) is on both stores; switch your phone to English and most of the interface follows, product pages stay Korean (live translation handles them). You need a Korean mobile number for the SMS code — a residence card is not required, so a visitor with a Korean SIM can order to a hotel — and a road-name address with building and unit number, plus the door code in the delivery note. Rocket packages are left at the door by default and photographed; there is no signature.

The card problem, solved (mostly)

For years Coupang took only Korean-issued cards. Its current rule, from its own help pages: overseas-issued Visa, Mastercard and JCB cards in the account holder's name are accepted when registered in Coupay (쿠페이), the built-in wallet — register the card once under Coupay, then pay with it; entering a foreign card as a one-time payment at checkout does not work. Registration is sometimes refused (issuer-side 3-D Secure differences are the usual cause) — try another card, or a Korean debit card from the account you opened in the bank guide, which is the reliable route for residents. Coupang Pay balance top-ups and bank transfer also work.

WOW: what ₩7,890 buys

The membership costs ₩7,890 a month (up from ₩4,990 on 2024-08-07, unchanged since) and bundles: free Rocket Delivery on any amount, next morning for orders by midnight (same-day in Seoul for early orders); Rocket Fresh groceries by 7 am, free; free returns within the window; Coupang Eats delivery at ₩0 (the delivery-app guide); Coupang Play streaming with sport and some Korean series; and member-only prices. Non-members pay about ₩3,000 delivery on orders under ₩19,800 — and since mid-April 2026 that threshold is the amount you actually pay after coupons, a quiet tightening. The calculator's rule of thumb: three or more small orders a month, or any Rocket Fresh habit, pays for WOW.

Rocket, marketplace, Jikgu

Three kinds of listing. Rocket Delivery (로켓배송, the rocket badge): Coupang's own stock, next morning, Coupang's returns. Marketplace (판매자 배송): third-party sellers, 2–5 days, seller's terms — check the badge before assuming tomorrow. Rocket Jikgu (로켓직구): overseas goods (US, China, Japan warehouses) with the customs handled — delivered in 3–7 days at prices that include duty and VAT where applicable. Korea's duty-free threshold for personal imports is US$150 per shipment (US$200 for US-origin goods by courier); above it, 10% VAT plus duty is charged, and Coupang shows it at checkout. A personal customs code (개인통관고유부호, from the customs website in minutes) is required for any overseas order and asked for at checkout.

Returns and support

Rocket items: return from the app within the return window (30 days is the widely quoted Rocket policy for unopened goods; the legal minimum under the e-commerce law is 7 days — Part 8), a courier collects from your door, refund in 1–3 days; non-members pay a return fee on change-of-mind returns, WOW members do not. Marketplace items follow the seller's policy within the law. Customer service is chat and phone in Korean, with English on the chat for some queues; the Korean 1372 consumer hotline is the escalation.

The breach

In November 2025 Coupang reported that a former employee had extracted data on 33.7 million accounts — names, emails, phone numbers, addresses and order information; not card numbers, by the company's account — and a further 165,000 records were disclosed in February 2026. The compensation, from January 15, 2026, was ₩50,000 per affected user in four vouchers (Rocket, Eats, Travel, Luxe), which customers and lawmakers called token. What it means for you: assume your address and phone are known, change your password to a unique one, turn on two-factor login in settings, and treat any call or message that quotes a Coupang order — the classic follow-up scam — as fraud. Coupang remains the dominant shop; it is simply no longer one to trust with a reused password.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sign up and pay with a foreign card?

Sign-up needs a Korean mobile number for the verification code (a tourist SIM works) and an address; no residence card is required. Payment: overseas-issued Visa, Mastercard and JCB cards in your own name are accepted once registered in Coupay (쿠페이), Coupang's wallet — not as a one-off card entry at checkout. Korean cards, bank transfer and Coupang Pay balance also work. Some overseas cards are declined at registration; a second card or a Korean debit card is the fallback.

Is WOW worth ₩7,890 a month?

If you order more than about three times a month, yes: WOW gives free Rocket Delivery on any amount (non-members pay about ₩3,000 below ₩19,800), free Rocket Fresh groceries, free returns, ₩0 delivery on Coupang Eats, and Coupang Play streaming. The fee rose from ₩4,990 to ₩7,890 in August 2024 and has not changed since. The calculator above uses your order count and Eats orders to show the break-even.

What changed with free delivery in 2026?

From mid-April 2026 the ₩19,800 free-delivery threshold for non-members is measured on the amount you actually pay after coupons and discounts, not on the list price — so a ₩22,000 basket with a ₩3,000 coupon no longer qualifies. WOW members are unaffected.

What about the data breach?

In November 2025 Coupang disclosed that data on about 33.7 million accounts (names, emails, phone numbers, addresses, some order data — not payment details, by its account) had been taken by a former employee; a further 165,000 records were disclosed in February 2026. Compensation was ₩50,000 per affected user in four service-specific vouchers, distributed from January 15, 2026, and widely criticised as low. Practical advice: use a unique password, enable two-factor login, and treat calls or messages quoting your Coupang orders as scams.
