Why buy sunscreen in Korea? The Korean tubes use UV filters that US brands cannot, and they are cheap even before a sale. On September 29, 2026, the six best-sellers below cost ₩15,000–27,900 on Olive Young's Korean site, usually with a free mini. The same sets on the Olive Young Global Mall cost about 50–80% more. And if you live in the US, the Global Mall no longer ships to you at all.
This is part 9 of the shopping course. Part 1, the Olive Young guide, covers the store itself, the sale weeks and the tax refund. This part is only about sunscreen.
The best-sellers, and what is actually in them
Olive Young's sun care ranking changes daily. On September 29 the top 80 included all six products below, and Round Lab's Birch Juice was also the sun care winner at the 2025 Olive Young Awards, its fourth year running. Korean shoppers sort sunscreens into three kinds: 무기자차 (mugi-jacha, mineral), 유기자차 (yugi-jacha, chemical) and 혼합자차 (honhap-jacha, both). The "UV filters" column comes from the full ingredient list on each product's Olive Young page.
| Product | Type | UV filters on the label | Pack | Korea price, Sep 29 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Sunscreen | Chemical | DHHB, ethylhexyl triazone, bisoctrizole, iscotrizinol | 50 ml + 20 ml cream | ₩17,500 (list ₩25,000) |
| Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics | Chemical | DHHB, ethylhexyl triazone, bisoctrizole, iscotrizinol | 50 ml (+20 ml in Korea) | ₩15,000 (list ₩20,000) |
| SKIN1004 Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum | Chemical | DHHB, ethylhexyl triazone, bisoctrizole, iscotrizinol | 50 ml | ₩17,300 (list ₩20,000) |
| Dr.G Green Mild Up Sun+ | Mineral | Zinc oxide | 50 ml + 20 ml | ₩21,900 (list ₩29,000) |
| Torriden Dive-In Mild Suncream | Mineral | Zinc oxide | 60 ml + 20 ml | ₩17,500 (list ₩25,000) |
| AESTURA Derma UV365 Barrier Hydro Mineral | Mineral | Zinc oxide | 40 ml + 20 ml | ₩27,900 (list ₩31,000) |
Two things stand out. First, the three chemical best-sellers list the same four filters on their labels. The concentrations are not published, so they are not identical products, but you are choosing mostly between textures and finishes, not filter systems. Second, none of those four filters is on the US FDA's approved list, which is why the US versions of these brands are different products (see below).
If your skin reacts to chemical filters, the mineral options are Dr.G, Torriden Mild and AESTURA, which list only zinc oxide. Two of the three cost more than the chemical tubes, and zinc oxide can leave a white cast, so try a tester on your jaw in the store before buying three.
How to read a Korean sunscreen label
Korea regulates sunscreen as a 기능성화장품 (gineungseong hwajangpum, "functional cosmetic"). The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety reviews the sun protection claim, and the box has to say so (Newsis, citing MFDS guidance).
| On the box | What it means |
|---|---|
| SPF50+ | Tested SPF of 50 or more. Korea prints anything above 50 as "50+" |
| PA+ to PA++++ | UVA grade. PA++++ is the top grade, a UVA factor of 16 or more |
| 기능성화장품 (gineungseong hwajangpum) | Sun protection claim reviewed by MFDS. No mark means no reviewed claim |
| 내수성 (naesuseong) / 지속내수성 (jisok-naesuseong) | Water resistant / extra water resistant |
| 사용기한 (sayong-gihan) | Use-by date. The six above last 30–36 months unopened, 12 months once opened |
A label is not a lab test. In Consumer Reports' July 2026 tests, the Korean tubes of Beauty of Joseon, Round Lab and Innisfree measured SPF 36, 46 and 48 against their "50+" labels. All three got top marks for UVA. Their US versions measured SPF 16–19. Use a generous amount, and reapply after heavy sweating; MFDS advises every two hours when you are in the water.
Korea vs the Global Mall: same tube, different price
The Global Mall ships from Korea to more than 60 countries, free over US$60 in most of them. It carries the Korean formulas, but prices are set in dollars and are well above the store price. The table compares the same sets on the same day at US$1 = ₩1,356.7 (closing rate, September 29).
| Product | Korea price | In US$ | Global Mall | Global Mall premium |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Round Lab | ₩17,500 | US$12.90 | US$20.30 | +57% |
| Beauty of Joseon | ₩15,000 | US$11.06 | US$18.00 | +63% |
| SKIN1004 | ₩17,300 | US$12.75 | US$19.36 | +52% |
| Dr.G | ₩21,900 | US$16.14 | US$24.16 | +50% |
| Torriden | ₩17,500 | US$12.90 | US$20.30 | +57% |
| AESTURA | ₩27,900 | US$20.56 | US$36.90 | +79% |
Olive Young Korea online price vs Global Mall sale price, same set, at US$1 = ₩1,356.7. The Beauty of Joseon Global Mall price is for 50 ml without the Korean 20 ml bonus.
The Global Mall price also excludes tax in your country. The UK collects VAT and duty at checkout on orders over £135, Australia charges 10% GST, and Canada may charge tax on delivery over CA$20. In Korea it runs the other way: as a tourist you get part of the VAT back. The tax refund guide explains how, and the sale calendar shows when to go.
If you live in the US
On May 29, 2026, Olive Young opened Olive Young US, an online store and its first American shop in Pasadena. US customers' Global Mall accounts moved to it. The US store must follow FDA rules, and the FDA treats sunscreen as an over-the-counter drug, so Korean-formula sunscreens are hard to buy there. What it sells instead is a US version under the same brand:
| Korean tube (Olive Young Korea) | US version (Olive Young US) | |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Birch Juice Moisturizing Sunscreen | Birch Juice Moisturizing UVlock |
| UV filters | DHHB, ethylhexyl triazone, bisoctrizole, iscotrizinol | Avobenzone 2.7%, homosalate 13.5%, octisalate 4.5% |
| Price | ₩17,500 for 50 ml + 20 ml cream | US$24.99 for 50 ml |
Consumer Reports did not rate the Korean formulas because they do not meet FDA rules and cannot legally be sold in the US, and it warns that a parcel flagged at the border may be confiscated. One change is coming slowly. On June 9, 2026 the FDA approved bemotrizinol, the first new US sunscreen filter since the late 1990s, at up to 6%. Among today's Korean best-sellers, only VT's PDRN Air Cloud sunscreen lists it. The four filters in the table above are still not allowed in the US.
Before you buy: a short checklist
- Buy in a sale week, in a set. 1+1 and "+20 ml" sets are the normal format, and the four Olyoung Sale weeks cut prices further (dates in part 1).
- Bring your passport. One receipt of ₩15,000 or more qualifies for the tourist refund.
- Pack it right. At Incheon Airport, sunscreen counts as a gel. Each container must be 100 ml or less, all in one 1 L bag. Put a haul in your checked bag, and see what to pack by month for the rest.
- Check the date. Look for 사용기한 (sayong-gihan) on the box. A tube is good for 12 months once opened, so buy a year's worth, not five.
- Pick by skin, not by rank. If chemical filters sting your eyes or skin, go mineral. If you are booking a laser or peel while you are here, the skin clinic guide covers what those treatments cost.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Korean sunscreen cost in Korea?
On September 29, 2026 the six best-sellers in this guide cost ₩15,000–27,900 on Olive Young's Korean site, usually for a 50–60 ml tube plus a free 20 ml mini. Shelf prices were ₩20,000–31,000, but almost every sunscreen runs a brand deal, and 1+1 sets are common. If you are a tourist, spending ₩15,000 or more on one receipt also gets you a tax refund.
Is the Olive Young Global Mall cheaper than buying in Korea?
No. For the same sets on the same day, Global Mall prices were about 50–80% higher than the Korean store price at US$1 = ₩1,356.7, before any VAT or duty in your country. Shipping is free over US$60 to most countries. It is a convenient way to restock, but not a cheap one.
Can I buy Korean sunscreen from Olive Young in the US?
Not the Korean formulas. Since May 29, 2026, US accounts have been moved to Olive Young US, which sells US versions that meet FDA rules. Its Round Lab Birch Juice 'UVlock' uses avobenzone, homosalate and octisalate, not the filters in the Korean tube. Consumer Reports says the Korean formulas cannot be sold legally in the US, and parcels flagged at the border may be confiscated.
What does SPF50+ PA++++ mean on a Korean sunscreen?
Korea prints any SPF of 50 or above as 'SPF50+', and grades UVA protection from PA+ to PA++++. PA++++ is the top grade, a UVA factor of 16 or more. Check for 기능성화장품 (gineungseong hwajangpum, 'functional cosmetic') on the box: that means the sun protection claim was reviewed by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
